Alpha Company Officer-in-Charge

LCDR Shelby Gaul, NSCC

LCDR Gaul was born and raised in Pomona, California. His father, a former Chief Quartermaster aboard the USS Ingersoll (DD-652) during WW-II, had told him of the numerous adventures he had encountered while in the Navy. This prompted LCDR Gaul to join the USS Helena Division Sea Cadets in 1963 at the age of 13. As a Sea Cadet he spent numerous weekends on ships stationed at the Long Beach Naval Base and participated in a 2 week Training aboard the USS Agerholm (DD-826) stationed in San Diego. He was a participant in the first US-Canadian Exchange Program where he spent 2 weeks training with the Canadian Cadets aboard HMCS Quadra in British Columbia.

At the age of 18, he left the Sea Cadet Corps and enlisted in the Naval Reserve. He wanted to be a Photographers Mate, which was an Aviation Rating, so he transferred to the Los Alamitos Naval Air Station where he earned his Striker Rating for Photographers Mate. Upon going “active duty” he was assigned to the Long Beach Naval Station for a few months before receiving orders to the Fleet Intelligence Center at NAS Cubi Point in the Philippines. While there, he did photo processing of aerial film for Intelligence. He was promoted to Photographer’s Mate 3rd Class and then transferred aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Coral Sea (CVA-43) in San Francisco. Shortly after arriving aboard Coral Sea, the ship left San Francisco to complete a 10 month WESTPAC Tour off Vietnam. The ship visited Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Australia. LCDR Gaul worked in the ships Photo Lab, Flash Lab, and was helo’d out to various Destroyers to shoot photos which they could include in their “Cruise Books”. Upon return to San Francisco, the Navy was undergoing manpower-cuts and LCDR Gaul returned to inactive Duty.

LCDR Gaul was hired by the City of Pomona Police Department as a Jail Custody Officer and, after 5 years, he was hired by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. Since completion of the Sheriff’s Academy he has held a variety of jobs in the capacities of jail custody, Patrol Deputy, Senior Deputy/Detective, Senior Correctional Officer, Training Officer, Station Detective, and Sheriff’s Arson/Bomb/Fugitive Detail. While with the Specialized Detective Division, he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration, Fire Investigator I and II Certification from the State of California, and Certification from the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland. He has earned Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced POST Certificates from the State of California Peace Officer Standards and Training.

LCDR Gaul’s children have followed in his military and Sea Cadet footsteps. LCDR Gaul became a Sea Cadet volunteer when his then 13-year old son joined the Ingraham Division. His three daughters also became Sea Cadets, and two are currently serving on active duty in the US Navy. LCDR Gaul currently serves as the Commanding Officer of the Coral Sea (formerly Ingraham) Division. He and his wife, Instructor Gaul, have been married for 31 years. They have a parrot, rabbit, and dog at home who keep them busy along with Sea Cadets.

Orthopedics Instructor

Professor William Bones, BS, MS, DS

The orthopedics portion of the course will be taught by the eminent osteologist, Professor William Bones.  He is widely regarded as the most effective instructor when it comes to teaching both the appendicular and axial skeletons.  According to the dean of one of the nation's premier medical schools, "he knows the human skeleton like the back of his own hand."

Professor Bones earned his D.S. degree (Doctor of Skeletons) at the well regarded John W. Marrow Medical College.  His dissertation, entitled "A Personal Perspective: Do I have an Endoskeleton or an Exoskeleton?" was widely read and is still receiving critical acclaim.   Professor Bones lettered in badminton at JWMMC, and was captain of the Donors' 1957 conference championship team.  He remains active in the JWMMC Alumni Association, holding the position of Chief Osteoblast.

Professor Bones also has a highly successful modeling and acting career.  His first modeling assignment came when he posed for a nautical flag.  His company, Jolly Roger, Inc. is still receiving annual royalties of several thousand doubloons.  His picture appears in almost every anatomy text ever written, but he has generously waived royalties from those publishers.  "It is my contribution to the betterment of mankind," he said.  "How can I take money for that?"  His most recent acting assignment was as Johnny Depp's stunt double for the moonlight fight scenes in "Pirates of the Caribbean."

Professor Bones looks forward to teaching all the cadets about the human body. Be prepared to answer that question that has perplexed mankind for centuries:  "Where is Gerdy's Tubercle and what inserts there?"  Those who know the answers will receive a "major award."
