News from NMC San Diego - 2008

Page last updated 1 Apr 2008

  • Photos from Thursday 27 March were uploaded yesterday (31 March), and photos from Friday 28 March and the Suture Awards were just uploaded today (1 April). Graduation photos from Saturday 29 March will be copied to the CD that will be sent to all members of the training, and will not be posted online. As soon as I've received all the photos, I'll get the CD put together, then it will get duplicated and mailed. I'll post a note here when it goes out.

  • Just finished uploading pictures from 26 March. While I have the photos for 27 March, and we will collect more photos on 28 March, they probably won't be uploaded until after the end of training. My focus for tomorrow (Friday) is to prepare the slide show for graduation and work on processing all the service records. Today I spent most of my time getting the group photos (one for Surgical Tech and one for Nurses' Corps) off to the printer. Career night was wonderful; be sure to ask your cadet about it! I will get the rest of the pictures processed and uploaded after I come out of my coma. And remember, a CD with all these photos, and more, will eventually find its way to you via USPS.

  • Hello again. I warned you that yesterday's load of photos was big. Guess what -- today has it beat. In particular, there were a lot of photos of the suturing class. Take a look, and the next time your cadet wants you to sew new flashes or rank on their uniform, remind them they learned to sew!

  • Greetings from sunny San Diego. Photos from Monday, 24 March have just been uploaded (the evening of 25 March). Please be aware that starting today you will see what your cadets are seeing, including lamb hearts, pig eyes, chicken thighs (for suture practice), human brains, and human legs. The POD (Plan of the Day) for Wednesday has also been uploaded. One nice problem has arisen -- we've got almost too many pictures! The Company Officers are doing a great job. I've been reluctant to cut out too many pictures, which would decrease the chance of seeing your cadet, so the pages will take a while to load. For example, according to my software the gallery page for 24 March will take over 5 minutes to load if you're using a dial-up connection. PLEASE BE PATIENT!

  • Photos from Sunday, 23 March have just been uploaded (the evening of 24 March). The general pattern HOPEFULLY will be that photos from one day will be uploaded the evening of the following day. The PODs (Plan of the Day) for Monday and Tuesday have been also been uploaded. Please be patient if delays occur, as we are all very busy here and all have multiple jobs at the training. Enjoy the photos as they come. Be aware that a photo CD of ALL the photos taken during training and posted will be mailed out to everyone at some point after the training.

  • The time and location for graduation have been changed. Graduation will now be at 1000 (10 a.m.) on Saturday, 29 March at the FTC Fleet Training Center / Training Support Center, 3975 Norman Scott Road Building 3290 (Operations/Administration), San Diego, CA 92136. Directions are available thru the Location & Travel page.

  • Friday night, March 28, the contingent will go to a special screening in San Diego of the movie "Fighting for Life".

FIGHTING FOR LIFE - Powerful and emotional, this real-life M*A*S*H for our times is the story of doctors and nurses fighting on the frontlines in the battle for life. With extraordinary access to combat support hospitals in Iraq, medevac flights with wounded veterans, and military hospitals in the U.S. and Germany, director/co-writer Terry Sanders interweaves three stories: military doctors, nurses and medics, working with compassion, skill and dedication in the vortex of the Iraq War; wounded soldiers and marines reacting with courage, dignity and determination to survive and to heal; and students at USU, the "West Point" of military medicine, on their journey toward becoming career military physicians. Features the song "No Surrender" - Bruce Springsteen's haunting elegy of compassion and determination. - View the trailer at  www.fightingforlifethemovie.com - 89 minutes. - Not Rated.

  • If you would like to see what your cadet is up to, the PODs (Plan of the Day) for each day are accessible from the gallery page for that day. Just click on the button to the left (or text link at the bottom) for the day you'd like to look at.

  • Photos are being taken by each of the 4 Company Officers, and will be uploaded pretty much every day. Only a selection of the photos will be put on the website, but ALL photos taken will be included on a CD which will be produced and mailed to all cadets after the training. This CD will also include a slideshow presentation of the week.

  • We'll try to get a variety of cadets' photos, BUT it is impossible for the officers to guarantee we'll get a picture of every cadet in action.

The following was received from Dr. Merbitz, who conducted the lower extremity dissection lab on Wednesday at Surgical Tech 2005:

Ms Eveland, I finally got a chance to write you and thank you for the opportunity to represent the Navy to the Sea Cadets in your new program. It was really an honor and privilege to be able to speak to TWO groups of those intelligent and eager young people. And I really want to thank YOU for your help and support that day as we made the first two presentations on the first day of this new program. I really appreciated it!

Sincerely,

Charles Merbitz, DPM, CDR, MSC, USN, Head of Podiatry NMCSD

CDR Rychnovsky replied that we should be thanking him, and the webmaster agrees wholeheartedly. On behalf of all the cadets and staff of Surgical Training 2005, a HUGE thank you and BRAVO ZULU to Dr Merbitz.
