The Missing Man
Table

Every U.S. Navy
galley has a Missing Man Table. At many formal military functions, a very moving
ceremony is performed. While the script below is read, an Honor Guard slowly and
ceremoniously sets up the table as described. At the end of the function, the
table is ceremoniously removed by the Honor Guard.
THE MISSING MAN TABLE CEREMONY
As you enter the
dining area, you may have noticed a table at the front, raised to call your
attention to its purpose -- it is reserved to honor our missing loved ones (or
missing comrades in arms, for veterans).
THIS
TABLE IS SET FOR SIX
The empty places
represent Americans still (our men) missing from each of the five services -
Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard - and civilians. This Honor
Ceremony symbolizes that they are with us, here in spirit.
THE
TABLE CLOTH IS WHITE
Symbolizing the
purity of their motives when answering the call to duty.
THE
WINE GLASS IS TURNED OVER
To symbolize their
inability to share this evening's (morning/day's toast).
THE
SALT ON THE PLATE
Is all that's left
of the tears when we were informed they will never join us again in
conversation.
THE
LEMON
Symbolizes the
bitterness felt in our hearts at the loss of their friendship.
YOU
MAY BE ASKING NOW ...
WHO
ARE THESE PEOPLE?
THEY
ARE OUR FELLOW SAILORS, FRIENDS, SHIPMATES.
Every sailor in
this room has probably lost such a friend in war or the routine of ship's life.
YOUTH ON EARTH WILL PREVAIL
Someone new will
accept the hat and the challenge that goes with being "A SAILOR."
